Morsels for the Soul

When I was young, I do not know how many times I complained about having to go to church or asked my parents why church was a necessary part of our week. Why couldn’t my family just sing a couple of songs together and then I could go enjoy some time with my friends at the mall or something? Why did we have to rush every Sunday morning to get up, get showered, eat some cold cereal, pile into the family van, drive to church, and then sit through a service that seemed to be irrelevant to my thoughts? After all, I never understood what the pastor talked about and the organ music droned on and on and put me to sleep. Why is church so necessary for our Christian lives?   The answer to this question comes succinctly in Acts 2;42-47. In this passage the author identifies many reasons for why we need to gather together as Christians. First, so that we can share in the meal of communion: a meal that is a joyful celebration for what God has done for us. When we eat this meal we remember that Christ died for us, we thankfully raise our glasses to the sky acknowledging this action, we look forward to Christ’s return and our final salvation, and we do this together. This meal loses much of its significance if we do not gather together to eat the bread and drink the cup. Secondly, the church helps us along our path of healing. In the worship service we can experience the miracles that come from God. Thirdly, the church prepares us to serve other people. We cannot go into the world to serve God if we fail to focus on him first. In order for us to truly give of our possessions and gifts we must first worship as a body and come to understand God’s will for our individual lives. Finally, being in church prepares us to preach to others and add to the numbers of our church and youth fellowship. We need to gather together in church with all the Christians, not because it is always fusn or because we enjoy the music or because we understand what the heck Pastor Joel is talking about, but because it prepares us to be in ministry and to enjoy the miracle of salvation that only comes from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So, come to church as often as you can in order to celebrate the joy of your salvation and focus on God’s desire for your lives.
