Monday Morning Musings

First Sunday of Advent

“Outside Eden’s Gate”

I love Christmas. I love the days leading up to Christmas. My family wasn’t the most active church goers but we were faithful ChrisEasters or Eastmases (those who faithfully attend church on Christmas Eve and Easter). I can still remember as a child going to church for a Christmas Eve service. There was something wonderful about that night. Perhaps it was because we were all together. Perhaps it was because of the sights and smells and sounds that captures a boy’s imagination. Red carpet. Old Oak pews. An altar trimmed with fresh greens. Lights around the stained-glass windows. And…it was the only time I truly remember hearing my father sing in his bass voice. He had a beautiful voice. There was something sacred about that night, that O Holy Night. But it still gives me pause to ask myself the same four questions I posed to you Sunday.

When did your Christmas begin?

What is your greatest hope, your greatest longing at Christmas?

What is your greatest fear at Christmas?

“What child is this who laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet and anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?”

The questions didn’t stop at Jesus’ birth. Look up the following verses and see why they asked the question.

Mark 4:41

Mt. 21:10

Lk. 5:21

Jn. 5:12

Jn. 12:34

Pray and ask your heavenly Father to reveal the true identity of his Son in a unique way this week.
